The lower stage of the tower of St Nicholas's is 12th century, and there is a wide Norman arch to the nave.

Much of the interior is 13th century including the tall chancel arch.

The east window has some fine early 14th century stained glass.

Kelly's Directory 1930 states :-

"The church of St. Nicholas is a building of stone, in the Norman, Early English and later styles, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 3 bells; the lower stage of the tower is Norman, but the upper part was rebuilt in the Decorated period:

in 1633 a part of the tower fell through the nave, doing much damage, which was repaired at the cost of John Palmer esq. of this place:

the remainder of the church appears to have been rebuilt during the Early English period, of which portions of the chancel, the arcades of the nave and the porch are examples:

the chancel has a sedile recess and a double piscina:

the entrance to the rood loft also remains, but of the  Perpendicular rood screen only a fragment now exists:

the aisles were rebuilt in the Decorated period, and their east and west windows of  this date remain; the east end of each aisle once formed a chantry, indicated by the piscina and statue brackets still in the walls:

the east window of the chancel, also Decorated, exhibits considerable portions of old stained glass, including figures of a knight in armour and his lady, each supporting a shield of arms; what should be the head of the lady is, however, the head of an ecclesiastic, brought from a distant church:

at the restoration, an ancient figure of our Lord, in benediction, was inserted:

there is also a stained window in memory of the men of the parish who fell in the Great War, 1914-18:

the pulpit is of carved oak:

the font, a large example, is Decorated, with traceried panels :

there are inscribed floor slabs to Robert Palmer, ob. 1653, who partly rebuilt the church, and his wife; and to the wife of Sir Lewis Palmer bart. of Carlton, Northants, ob. 1649:

there are 175 sittings"

White's Directory 1872 notes :-

"The Church (St. Nicholas) is an ancient structure. The lower part of the tower is of Anglo-Norman architecture, and there is a large arch of the same style, opening into the nave, but most other parts of the fabric are in the Decorated style.

The font has a square base and octagonal bowl.

The east window is a fine specimen of the architecture of the reign of Edward III., and has in its upper divisions some beautifully-painted glass.

Part of the tower fell through the roof of the nave in 1630, but the whole was restored in 1633, at the cost of John Palmer.

The rectory, valued in K.B. at £13. 1s. 5d., has 40 acres of glebe, and a yearly corn rent of £380, awarded in lieu of tithes, in 1839"
